  • International students may only apply an SSN if he/she has a job offer that has been authorized by the Office of International Services.  If you do not have a job offer, you may not apply for a Social Security Number (SSN).  To replace the SSN card, you will need to fill out the SS-5 Form for an Ineligibility Letter. This can be used for your DMV/BMV, when applying for a state I.D. or driver’s license.

To obtain an Ineligibility Letter, you will need the following documents.  Note: Depending on your location, you may need to make an appointment with your nearest Social Security Administration Office (some are now open).

    1. Passport
    2. Visa
    3. I-94
    4. I-20 with work authorization
    5. 2 proofs of residency (we can supply one Proof of Residency Letter, once you fill out the form)
    6. SS-5 Form (you will be denied the SSN unless you have a job offer, but the denial form will be a replacement for your SSN card)
